Looking for an easy-to-moderate hike in the Salt Lake Valley, with amazing views and a quick payoff?

Whether you’re visiting Utah or need a fun weekend activity, Willow Hollow Trail—aka “The Stairs” in Herriman— is a must-try. The Stairs is a short, scenic trail, and even doubles as a perfect spot to watch fireworks light up the valley on the 4th of July.

Why This Herriman Hike Is Worth It

While visiting Utah, my brother—who knows all the best local trails—took me to one of his go-to quick hikes on the outskirts of Herriman. We had tons of fun- just us, the mountain, our dogs, and many- many stairs.

Officially, it’s called the Wide Hollow Trailhead, but we call it “The Stairs.” The top of the stairs connects to the Bonneville Shoreline Trail, so you can keep exploring if you’re feeling adventurous.

But if you’re short on time? This hike is perfect—you can get a great workout and incredible views in about an hour.

What to Expect on “The Stairs”

Let’s talk about the stairs.

Yes, there are a lot of them, but don’t let that scare you off. Think of it as nature’s version of a StairMaster… just with way better views.

  • Moderate effort, beginner-friendly pace
  • Great for a quick cardio workout
  • Totally manageable for most hikers

And if you’ve heard of the Koko Head hike in Oahu… don’t worry. This has way less stairs. (If you know, you know).

Views That Make The Stairs Worth It

Once you reach the top, you’re rewarded with sweeping views that make every step worth it:

  • Salt Lake Valley
  • Utah Lake
  • The Uinta Mountains

You’ll also find connecting trails if you want to keep hiking and explore more lookout points.

Trail Highlights

  • 🐕 Dog-friendly – Perfect for bringing your pup
  • ⏱️ Short & efficient – Ideal for busy days or quick adventures
  • 🌄 Panoramic views – Big reward for a relatively short climb
  • 🎆 Firework views – A hidden gem on the 4th of July

Utah’s Unique Desert Landscape

Utah has a kind of desert beauty that feels completely different from places like Arizona or New Mexico. It’s softer, more mountainous, and full of contrast—making hikes like this feel both rugged and peaceful at the same time.
