Parking and Transportation at Balboa Park

Each museum has different hours and days of operation, so it’s best to check schedules in advance. There is a good amount of free parking throughout Balboa Park, especially near major attractions. Parking can get crowded during weekends and special events, but we’ve always been able to find a space.

To make getting around easier, Balboa Park offers a free tram service that shuttles visitors between parking lots and major attractions.

Balboa Park is also accessible via public transportation, including San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) buses, and is located near the City College trolley station on the Orange Line.

Choosing Which Museums to Visit

With 16 museums, multiple gardens, and the San Diego Zoo, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed when planning your visit. Below is a brief overview of each museum, along with notes on which ones were our personal favorites—so you can prioritize based on your interests and time.

The Museums

Comic-Con Museum at Balboa Park

This one was of our top four favorite.

Comic Con Museusm at Balboa Park, outside in San Diego,

Hear me out—I’m not a comic girly, and I’m not deeply into sci-fi, but this ended up being one of my favorite museums at Balboa Park

The Comic-Con Museum explores science fiction, film, comics, television, robotics, and engineering, while showing how imaginative ideas have influenced real-world technology. During our visit, the museum offered a scavenger hunt, which made the experience even more engaging.

One exhibit showcased phones throughout history, including a massive Motorola “brick” phone. My husband laughed, remembering his dad being extremely proud of a car-connected block phone back in the day.

Another highlight was a wall of mathematical and engineering visionaries, where Elon Musk appeared alongside Leonardo da Vinci, sparking some interesting conversations.

My favorite section was The Evolution of Robots Timeline, beginning in 1920 when a Czech playwright first introduced the word “robot.” The exhibit moves through Metropolis (1927), Star Wars droids, and modern robotics, ending with discussions about nanobots being developed for medical use inside the bloodstream.

Yes—there’s also a Jurassic Park dinosaur egg incubator where you control robotic arms, a comic drawing room, a cardboard sculpture contest, a full-size Back to the Future DeLorean with the Flux Capacitor, and a terrifying Aliens replica. The basement features rotating exhibits; when we visited, it was all about Betty Boop.

San Diego Natural History Museum

One of Our Top 4 Favorites

San Diego is incredibly diverse in both climate and landscape, and the San Diego Natural History Museum does an excellent job showcasing the wildlife of Southern California—past and present. From towering dinosaur skeletons to exhibits on ancient mammals and local ecosystems, this museum highlights just how much life has evolved in this corner of Southern California.

One of my favorite displays is the large directional signpost illustrating the region’s environmental diversity. It’s amazing to realize how quickly the scenery changes here—lush coastal landscapes filled with succulents transition, within just a few miles, into hot desert terrain dotted with cacti. The museum captures this contrast beautifully.

The museum also features the Kaplan Theater, which runs short educational films throughout the day. We watched one about the lifespan of the mighty T. rex—quick, fascinating, and packed with paleontology facts.

If you’re interested in dinosaurs, local wildlife, geology, or the natural history of San Diego, this museum is absolutely worth a stop.

Fleet Science Center

One of Our Top 4 Favorites

The Fleet Science Center is one of the most fun and immersive museums in Balboa Park, making it perfect for both kids and adults. With your admission ticket, you also receive access to one documentary in the Globe Theater, and it’s well worth planning time for it.

The massive dome-shaped screen curves above and around you, creating a fully immersive experience that truly makes you feel like you’re inside the film. We watched The Deep Sky, which showcased breathtaking images captured by the Hubble Space Telescope. At times, it felt like we were soaring through distant galaxies.

Beyond the theater, the museum itself is a hands-on science playground. Interactive exhibits encourage visitors to experiment, explore, and tinker, making learning feel effortless and fun. And honestly—even as an adult—I found myself trying nearly everything.

If you’re looking for a family-friendly museum in San Diego that blends education, immersion, and fun, the Fleet Science Center is an easy favorite.

Japanese Friendship Garden

One of Our Top 4 Favorites

The Japanese Friendship Garden quickly became one of my absolute favorite places in Balboa Park. It’s incredibly peaceful and beautifully designed—so much so that I genuinely felt transported to Japan.

Whether you’re strolling along the serene garden pathways, watching koi glide through the tranquil ponds, or simply sitting and taking it all in, the garden offers a calming, meditative atmosphere that feels like a true escape from the busier parts of the park.

Hours: Open daily from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM
Last admission: 6:00 PM

This is the perfect spot to slow down, relax, and recharge while exploring Balboa Park attractions.

San Diego Air and Space Museum

The San Diego Air & Space Museum was actually on my dad’s bucket list when he visited San Diego—he loves all things aviation and space—so adding it to our Balboa Park itinerary was an easy choice.

From the moment you walk through the dome-shaped entrance, you’re greeted by an impressive collection of historic aircraft suspended overhead, representing different eras of flight. It immediately sets the tone—this museum is built to amaze and inspire.

One of the best parts of visiting is the free guided tours offered throughout the day. I highly recommend joining one. The guides share fascinating stories about inventors, engineers, and pilots, adding depth and context to the exhibits while helping you navigate the museum with ease.

During our visit, the museum featured a special Leonardo da Vinci exhibit, showcasing scale models of his innovative designs. Some exhibits were interactive, and seeing his mechanical ideas brought to life was surprisingly captivating.

Be sure not to skip the space exploration exhibit, where you can see the real Apollo 9 command module used in preparation for the lunar landing. There’s also an actual moon rock on display—small, but incredibly awe-inspiring.

The museum also includes dedicated World War I and World War II galleries, complete with fighter planes, historic artifacts, and personal pilot stories that bring aviation history vividly to life.

Overall, the San Diego Air & Space Museum offers a perfect blend of history, innovation, and hands-on learning, whether you’re an aviation enthusiast or simply love great storytelling and remarkable machines.

Museum of Us

Hours: Daily, 11:00 AM – 5:00 PM

I’ll be honest—this wasn’t my favorite museum at Balboa Park, but it does feature a few memorable and thought-provoking exhibits that may appeal to visitors interested in anthropology and human history.

⭐ California Tower Experience

The Museum of Us is connected to the iconic California Tower, which offers guided tours with panoramic views of Balboa Park.

  • Tours require advance reservations
  • Groups are limited to six people
  • You’ll climb 125 steps
  • The experience lasts about 40 minutes, including time at the top
💡 Note: The tower tour costs extra but is a unique way to see the park from above.

Ancient Brewing & Fermentation Exhibit

One of the standout exhibits explored ancient brewing and fermentation practices.

  • In ancient Egypt, beer was so valuable it was used as currency, with laborers receiving about one gallon per day
  • The exhibit also highlighted ancient Nubians, who may have benefited from natural antibiotics created through mold-based fermentation in their beer

This exhibit was fascinating and offered a surprising connection between history, science, and culture.

PostSecret Exhibit

The PostSecret exhibit, created by Frank Warren, showcased anonymous secrets submitted by people from around the world.

  • Some entries were humorous
  • Others were deeply emotional and quite dark

We left feeling a bit heavy after this exhibit. If you’re visiting Balboa Park with kids, this is one exhibit you may want to skip.

These were 2 of my favorites,,,

San Diego Model Railroad Museum

Hours: Tuesday–Sunday, 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM

The San Diego Model Railroad Museum is a must-see if you love trains—or are traveling with kids who do.

This museum features an impressively detailed model train layout, complete with elaborate landscapes, miniature cities, and realistic scenery. The craftsmanship is outstanding, and it’s easy to spend more time here than expected watching the trains in motion.

👨‍👩‍👧 Perfect for families and a great option if you’re looking for a kid-friendly museum in Balboa Park.
